Swimming and Diving Returns to the Pool on Saturday to Host Vermont and Howard

BALTIMORE, Md. – The UMBC swimming and diving teams will cap off the first week of 2018 as they return to the pool to host a Howard and Vermont on Saturday, January 6. The Retrievers last competed at the Patriot Invitational in November.

Where: Baltimore, Md. – UMBC Aquatic Complex

When: Saturday, Jan. 6 – 2:00 p.m.

Last Time Out:

The Retrievers have not competed since the Patriot Invitational, hosted by George Mason, back in November. The men finished in fifth place with 501 points, while the women finished in seventh with 261 points.

Sophomore Ilia Rattsev (Moscow, Russia) set a Patriot Invitational record in the 100 free, where he touched in with a time of 44.81. He broke the record of 44.92 set back in 2015 by former Retriever Gregor Spoerlein.

Rattsev, along with Philip Adejumo, Connor Ganley, and Alexander Gliese took seventh place in the 400 free relay with a time of 3:06.83.

Gliese took home silver in the 200 back with a time of 1:48.46, while Adejumo placed fifth in the championship final of the 200 fly with a time of 1:51.51.

In the 1,650 free, UMBC picked up two top ten finishes as freshman Kai Wisner (Syracuse, N.Y.) earned gold with a time of 15:43.14, while senior Haythem Abdelkhalek (Ariana, Tunisia) finished sixth with a time of 16:09.77. Kyle Paxton (Bel Air, Md./C. Milton Wright) earned an eighth place finish in the 200 breast, touching in with a time of 2:06.25.

On the women's side, junior Hania Moro (New Cairo, Egypt) finished fourth in the 1,650 free, touching in with a time of 17:01.28. She also earned bronze in the 200 free as she finished with a time of 1:52.00 and silver in the 500 free with a time of 4:55.85.

Freshman Natalija Marin (Belgrade, Serbia) earned a seventh place finish in the 200 fly after finishing with a time of 2:03.98. Marin also finished third in the 100 fly after she touched the wall in 56.12; she also finished fourth in the B finals of the 200 free with a time of 1:53.76.

Junior Maddy Popalis (East Petersburg, Pa.) finished second in the B finals in the 100 breast, touching in with a time of 1:06.38. Sophomore Emily Vance (Finksburg, Md./Westminster) finished first in the B finals in the 100 back with a time of 57.79.

The women also picked up a pair of top ten relay finishes, as the team of Moro, Natalie Davis, Britt Driscoll, and Marin finished fifth in a time of 7:37.63. In the 200 medley relay, Vance, Popalis, Marin, and Cassandra Willie finished sixth in a time of 1:46.49.

On the boards, Elijah Wright (Baltimore, Md./Loyola Blakefield) finished fifth in the 1 meter dive with a score of 250.35.

UMBC will close out the regular season with a home tri-meet against East Carolina and VMI on Saturday, January 20 at 1 p.m. Prior to the meet, the Retrievers will honor their senior class.
