CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – After setting season-bests in both diving competitions at the Patriot Invitational, UMBC sophomore Corinna Darelius (Rye, N.Y./Rye) has been named the America East Diver of the Week, the conference office announced on Tuesday afternoon.
Darelius collected a silver medal in the 3-meter competition while placing fifth in the 1-meter event at the three-day invitational at George Mason.
On the first day of competition, Darelius scored 254.95 to lead the field in the 3-meter event, and followed it by scoring 241.25 in the finals to earn a silver medal. Then, on Friday, the sophomore sat in fifth-place after the prelims with a score of 215.30. In the event finals, Darelius improved her score to a season-best 232.30 to remain in fifth overall.
Darelius is the second member of the UMBC women's team to earn a weekly conference honor after senior Talor Tadena (Orangevale, Calif./Bella Vista) was named the Swimmer of the Week on Nov. 5. The weekly honor is the eighth overall for the Retriever program as senior Mohamed Hussein (Cairo, Egypt/Victory College) has earned two Coastal Collegiate Swimming Association (CCSA) Swimmer of the Week awards and classmate Johan Rohtla (Tallinn, Estonia/Tallinn Secondary Science) has earned one. Meanwhile, senior Tim Perkins (Frederick, Md./Tuscarora) has been awarded the CCSA Diver of the Week award twice with junior Carson Wong (Hong Kong/Kowloon Technical School) receiving the diving accolade once as well.
The UMBC swimming and diving team has the remainder of the 2013 calendar year off from competition before hosting Howard on Jan. 11 to open 2014.
