MINNEAPOLIS – UMBC freshman Emily Escobedo wrapped up her first career NCAA Championships by competing in the 200-yd. breaststroke, Saturday afternoon on the final day of competition of the 2014 Women’s Swimming and Diving Championships at the University of Minnesota’s University Aquatic Center.

MINNEAPOLIS – UMBC freshman Emily Escobedo finished 52nd out of 62 swimmers in the prelims of the 200-yd. individual medley with a new school record time, Thursday afternoon on Day One of the 2014 NCAA Women’s Swimming and Diving Championships at the University of Minnesota’s University Aquatic Center.

Escobedo Set To Represent UMBC at 2014 NCAA Swimming and Diving Championships in Minneapolis
BALTIMORE – UMBC freshman Emily Escobedo will become just the third Retriever female swimmer, and fourth swimmer overall, to compete at the national championships when the 2014 NCAA Swimming and Diving Championships open on Thursday, March 20 at the University of Minnesota’s University Aquatic Center in Minneapolis, Minn.

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Senior Patty Hallberg, as well as sophomores Corinna Darelius and Catherine Frediani, have been named to the 2014 America East Women’s Swimming and Diving All-Academic Team, the conference office announced on Wednesday afternoon.

Women’s Swimming and Diving Receives CSCAA Team Scholar All-America Award
NORFOLK, Va. – The UMBC women’s swimming and diving team has been named a 2013 Fall College Swimming Coaches Association of America (CSCAA) Scholar All-America Team, the organization announced on March 6. The CSCAA Scholar All-America program is supported by Nike.

Darelius and Green Become First Retrievers to Advance to Finals on Day Two of NCAA Zone “A” Diving Championships
CHRISTIANSBURG, Va. – UMBC divers Corinna Darelius (Rye, N.Y./Rye) and Ryan Green (Ellicott City, Md./Centennial) became the first UMBC divers to advance to the Zones finals in school history, as the UMBC divers competed on Day Two of the NCAA Zone “A” Diving Championships, Tuesday at the Christiansburg Aquatic Center.

BALTIMORE – For the second consecutive season, the UMBC swimming and diving team sends four divers to the NCAA Zone “A” Diving Meet. This year’s regional diving meet will take place from March 10-12 and will be hosted by Virginia Teach at the Christiansburg Aquatic Center.

ANNAPOLIS, Md. – UMBC freshman Emily Escobedo and senior Mohamed Hussein each set new ECAC records, broke UMBC records, and lowered NCAA “B” cut times as the Retrievers wrapped up competition at the 2014 ECAC Championships, Sunday afternoon at the U.S. Naval Academy’s Lejeuene Hall.

Select Swimming Athletes Head to Navy to Represent UMBC for the 2014 ECAC Championships
BALTIMORE – Following second-place finishes at their respective conference championships, the UMBC swimming and diving teams will send select athletes to Annapolis, Md. this weekend for the 2014 ECAC Championships at Navy. The meet will be held at the U.S. Naval Academy’s Lejeune Hall and will run from Friday, Feb. 28 through Sunday, March 2.

UMBC Women finish Second for Third Straight Year at 2014 America East Championships; Escobedo Named Swimmer and Rookie of the Year, Darelius Selected Diver of the Year
WORCESTER, Mass. – UMBC freshman Emily Escobedo claimed an individual gold medal and school record for the second consecutive night, but for the third-straight year, the UMBC women’s swimming and diving team finished second at the America East Championships as the three-day competition came to a close Sunday evening at Worcester Polytechnic Institute.

Women’s Swimming Makes Solo Trek to Massachusetts for America East Championships; Meet Postponed until Friday Due to Inclement Weather
BALTIMORE – For the first time since joining the America East Conference in 2003-04, just the UMBC women's swimming and diving team will be heading to the conference championship meet to be held at Worcester Polytechnic Institute. The meet, which was supposed to begin Thursday evening has been pushed back until Friday morning due to inclement weather in the Worcester, Mass. area. The meet will most likely take on a three-day format similar to the NCAA Championships.

GREENVILLE, N.C. – UMBC freshman Emily Escobedo won all three of her individual events while senior Johan Rohtla swept the men’s backstroke events as UMBC swept Catawba but fell to East Carolina, Saturday afternoon at ECU’s Minges Natatorium.

BALTIMORE – With less than a month until the America East Championships and the Coastal Collegiate Swimming Association (CCSA) Championships, the UMBC swimming and diving program wraps up its 2013-14 dual meet season with a double-dual meet on Saturday against East Carolina and Catawba College. The meet is set to begin at 1:00 p.m. at ECU’s Minges Natatorium in Greenville, N.C.

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – UMBC sophomores Catherine Frediani (Ellicott City, Md./Howard) and Corinna Darelius (Rye, N.Y./Rye) have swept the America East Swimming and Diving weekly awards, the conference office announced on Tuesday morning. Frediani was named the Swimmer of the Week after her two wins against Howard while Darelius claims the diving award following a sweep of the diving events last Saturday.

Swimming and Diving to Close Out 2013-14 Home Schedule with Senior/Alumni Day on Saturday against Howard
BALTIMORE – The UMBC swimming and diving teams close out their 2013-14 home schedule with their first and only home meet of 2014, Saturday against Howard. The Retrievers and Bison will take to the UMBC Aquatic Complex pool at 1:00 p.m. following a ceremony to recognize the 13 Retriever seniors who will be completing their home careers.

66 Athletes + 4 Coaches = 1 Goal
Team (n.) – a group of people who compete in a sport, game, etc., against another group; a group of people who work together. Though technically the UMBC swimming and diving team is actually two entities, a men’s squad and a women’s squad, the 66 combined athletes, plus the four coaches prefer to consider themselves just one team. One team, with one goal – win a conference championship.

Green and Darelius Qualify for NCAA Zones for Second Straight Year During Florida Trip; Green Named CCSA Diver of the Week
CORAL SPRINGS, Fla. – UMBC divers Ryan Green and Corinna Darelius each qualified for the NCAA Zones meet for the second straight season during a diving competition with George Mason, Penn State, and West Virginia in Coral Springs, Fla. on Jan. 4. Darelius and Green join senior Tim Perkins, who met the standard back in October, as entries for the Retrievers at the regional meet.

Swimming and Diving Closes Fall at Three-Day Patriot Invitational; Competition Begins Thursday
BALTIMORE – After four dual meets in October and November, the UMBC swimming and diving team closes the fall portion of its 2013-14 schedule with the three-day Patriot Invitational which begins Thursday at George Mason. The multi-day competition will commence at 10:00 a.m. each morning with event prelims, and then reconvene at 6:00 p.m. for the finals of each competition.

Retriever Men Pick Up Road Dual Meet Win; Women Fall in Close Decision at Old Dominion
NORFOLK, Va. –Reigning CCSA Swimmer of the Week senior Mohamed Hussein (Cairo, Egypt/Victory College) once again won multiple events and the Retrievers swimming and diving team defeated Old Dominion, 158.5-139.5, Saturday afternoon. The UMBC women battled, but fell to the Monarchs, 155-145, despite three wins from senior Talor Tadena (Orangevale, Calif./Bella Vista).

BALTIMORE – After earning a sweep of George Washington last Saturday at the UMBC Aquatic Complex, the UMBC swimming and diving programs head south for its second road dual meet of the season. The Retrievers will travel to Norfolk, Va. to take on Old Dominion at 1:00 p.m.

BALTIMORE – UMBC senior diver Tim Perkins (Frederick, Md./Tuscarora) set a pair of career bests and qualified for NCAA zones in the 3-meter dive as the Retrievers bounced back from last week’s performance by sweeping George Washington on Saturday afternoon at the UMBC Aquatic Complex.

Swimming and Diving Sweeps Relays but Falls to Navy in Dual Meet
BALTIMORE – The UMBC swimming and diving teams swept all four relay events, but it was not enough as Navy swept the Retrievers in a dual meet, Friday afternoon at the UMBC Aquatic Complex. The Midshipmen won the men’s meet, 154.5-145.5, while the Navy women downed the Retrievers, 163-137.

Swimming and Diving Hosts Navy to Open 2013-14 Home Slate
BALTIMORE – After opening the dual meet season with a sweep of Rider in New Jersey last weekend, the UMBC swimming and diving teams open up the home portion of their schedules by hosting Navy on Friday at the UMBC Aquatic Complex. The Retrievers and Midshipmen are scheduled to start the meet 4:00 p.m.

Hussein and Rohtla Sweep IM and Backstroke Events for Men, Escobedo and Lilly Take Breaststroke and IM Competitions as UMBC Opens Season at Bucknell
LEWISBURG, Pa. – UMBC senior Mohamed Hussein (Cairo, Egypt/Victory College) started his final season with a bang by winning all three of the individual medley events while classmate Johan Rohtla (Tallinn, Estonia/Tallinn Secondary Science) swept the backstroke events and the UMBC swimming and diving teams won 25 of 44 events in an exhibition meet against Bucknell, Saturday afternoon at Kinney Natatorium.
