UMBC WOMEN'S SOCCER FALLS IN HOME OPENER TO DELAWARE, 3-0

After holding each other scoreless through the first 39 minutes of play, the Blue Hens broke the tie at the 39:20 mark when Caryn Blood trapped a ball just to the left of the Retrievers net and found teammate Trisha Breault camped out in the middle of penalty box. Breault one-timed Blood’s pass into the bottom left corner of the Retriever net for the opening goal of the game.
With a 1-0 lead the Blue Hens carried their momentum from their late first half goal out of the break, netting two insurance goals in the second half. Scoring the second goal of the game for the Blue Hens was Shelby Lawrence, who let a shot rip from the top of the key, curving past diving Retrievers’ goalkeeper Robin Babaris (
Less than 15 minutes later the Blue Hens tallied their third goal of the game as Allison Kendro netted her first goal of the season with an assist by Ginette Buffone.
Down by three UMBC attacked late in the game but was unable to find the back of the net, tallying seven shots in the game compared to 14 by the Blue Hens. Barbaris made five saves in the game, including a stellar diving stop midway through the second half to keep the Retrievers still in striking distance.
