Rachel McKee was UMBC's America East Player of the Game.

BALTIMORE—UMBC freshman goalie Lauren Kadet (Oakville, Ontario/St. Thomas Aquinas) made eight saves and the Retrievers (2-8-1, 1-1-0 AE) had several good scoring opportunities but could not capitalize in a 1-0 loss to defending America East champion Boston University (7-5-0, 2-0-0 AE) Thursday afternoon at a soggy UMBC Stadium.

The Terriers broke a scoreless tie with just 40 seconds remaining in the first half when Kadet ran out of her box to the left side of the net to get the ball, but it was kicked over her head and found BU midfielder Kylie Strom inside the box. Kadet scrambled but could not get back in position in time, and Strom knocked it into an open net.

Boston U. made the goal stand despite several good scoring opportunities for the Retrievers. Just 3:19 into the game, sophomore forward Rachel McKee (Ellicott City, Md./Mount Hebron) sent a shot over BU goalie Kelly King’s head, but it hit off the crossbar. McKee had another chance early in the second half, but her shot hit off the far post.

In addition to Kadet’s eight stops, the UMBC defense was credited with a pair of team saves. King and Alice Binns each played one half in goal for the Terriers; King made the lone save of the day for BU, as the Terriers outshot the Retrievers, 18-6, including 11-1 in shots on goal. McKee took a team-high three shots and was named UMBC’s America East Player of the Game.

The Retrievers return to action on Sunday when they travel to America East rival New Hampshire for a 12 p.m. kickoff.
