Retrievers Fall to Albany, 1-0

    Mo Van Vlerah stopped nine shots against Albany.

    BALTIMOREAlbany forward Ashley Tirabassi scored early in the 18th minute to lead the Great Danes (7-7-1, 2-2-1 AE) to a 1-0 victory over UMBC (2-11-1, 1-4-0 AE) Thursday afternoon in America East women’s soccer action at a rainy UMBC Stadium.

     

    At the 17:05 mark, forward Katie Grant sent a cross from the left side to Tirabassi in front of the net, and Tirabassi headed the ball into the lower-right corner of the goal for a 1-0 lead that would hold up over the final 73 minutes.

     

    UMBC sophomore goalie Mo Van Vlerah (Ijamsville, Md./Northwest) made nine saves for the Retrievers, while Albany keeper Cate Crenson stopped one shot.

     

    The Great Danes outshot UMBC, 20-1, in the game, and held a 7-2 advantage on corner kicks.

     

    The Retrievers return to action on Sunday, Oct. 18, when they visit America East rival Binghamton at 1 p.m.
