TIGERS UPEND RETRIEVERS, 5-1, IN WOMEN'S SOCCER OPENER

Senior Melissa Mueller (Hereford H.S./White Hall, Md.) scored the sixth goal of her college career late in the first half to break a scoreless tie and lead Towson University (1-0) to a 5-1 non-conference victory over UMBC (0-1) in the season opener for both teams on Friday afternoon at the Tigers’Towson Center Field.Mueller was one of five Tigers to score in the game as Towson jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the first 75 minutes. Mueller gave Towson a 1-0 lead at 37:32 when she took a pass from sophomore Melissa Raszewski and blasted a 20-yard shot past UMBC goalkeeper Robin Babaris (Sir Oliver Mowat/Ontario, Canada).Early in the second half, junior Holly Noga (Severna Park H.S./Severna Park, Md.) gave Towson a 2-0 lead when she scored on a breakaway, chipping the ball over Babaris into the net. The Tigers upped their lead to 3-0 at 64:07 as junior Natalie Klisas hit a 25-yard shot into the nearpost. Sophomore Mollie Merkel scored the first goal of her career at 75:56 when she tallied an unassisted goal to givethe Tigers a 4-0 lead.A rebound goal by junior Lori Quintavalle (Haddonfield Memorial H.S./Haddonfield, N.J.) at 77:00 put UMBC on the scoreboard, cutting the lead to 4-1.Sophomore Annie Hay closed out the scoring at 88:01 when she scored the first goal of her college career off another assist by Raszewski.Junior goalkeeper Yasmin Alter (Archbishop Spalding H.S./Bowie, Md.) had three saves for the Tigers, who outshot UMBC by 15-6. Babaris made four saves for the Retrievers.
