Women’s Soccer Takes on Bucknell Wednesday

    BALTIMOREThe UMBC women’s soccer team (0-2-0) continues its season-opening four-game road swing Wednesday when it takes on Bucknell (0-2-0). Kickoff from Varsity Soccer Field in Lewisburg, Pa., is set for 7 p.m.

     

    Last Time Out: The Retrievers fell to La Salle, 5-0, on Sunday afternoon in Philadelphia. Sophomore goalie Mo Van Vlerah (Ijamsville, Md./Northwest) made four saves in the game. The Explorers outshot the Retrievers, 19-4.

     

    Dawg Bites: Van Vlerah has made 10 saves in two games, including a season-high six at No. 23 Rutgers in the opener last Tuesday… Freshman forward Rachel McKee (Ellicott City, Md./Mount Hebron) has taken three of the Retrievers’ seven shots on the season… Five of UMBC’s seven shots have been on goal… Senior back Arielle Tagger (East Brunswick, N.J./East Brunswick) and junior back Christine Sadowski (Baltimore, Md./Kenwood) have been named team captains for the 2009 season… All of the Retrievers’ goals in 2008 were scored by underclassmen.

     

    On the Bison: Bucknell is 0-2-0 on the season and coming off a 3-0 loss at James Madison on Sunday… Forward Megan DeGennaro has scored the Bison’s only goal on the year… Keeper Kathryn Sutton has made both starts in net and has stopped seven shots while allowing four goals… Forward Christa Matlack was named Patriot League Preseason Player of the Year after tallying eight goals and four assists for 20 points in 2008… Bucknell was picked to finish third in the Patriot League preseason coaches poll after posting an 11-6-3 record last season.

     

    The Series: The Bison lead the all-time series, 3-2-0, including wins in each of the last two seasons. Bucknell defeated UMBC, 3-0, last year in Baltimore. The Retrievers are 0-2-0 all-time in Lewisburg, including a 5-1 loss in 2007.
