Women’s Soccer Heads to La Salle Sunday

BALTIMOREThe UMBC women’s soccer team (0-1-0) travels to Philadelphia Sunday afternoon to take on La Salle (1-0-0). Kick-off from McCarthy Stadium is set for 1 p.m. Live video streaming will be available for a small fee via La Salle All-Access. Fans can also follow along for free with GameTracker.

 

Last Time Out: In Tuesday’s season opener in Piscataway, N.J., 23rd-ranked Rutgers scored three times in the first 17 minutes and defeated UMBC, 4-0. Sophomore goalie Mo Van Vlerah (Ijamsville, Md./Northwest) made six saves in the game, and freshman forward Rachel McKee (Ellicott City, Md./Mount Hebron) took two of the Retrievers’ three shots on the night.

 

Dawg Bites: All 10 of the Retrievers’ goals in 2008 were scored by underclassmen… Senior back Arielle Tagger (East Brunswick, N.J./East Brunswick) and junior back Christine Sadowski (Baltimore, Md./Kenwood) have been named team captains for the 2009 season… Sadowski was named the team’s Unsung Hero at UMBC’s varsity awards banquet, while forward Brooke Piper (London, Ontario/A.B. Lucas) earned Most Improved Athlete and midfielder JoAnne Jackson (Portland, Ore./Lincoln) won the Retriever Club Scholarship Award.

 

On the Explorers: La Salle is 1-0-0 on the season after a 4-2 season-opening victory over Drexel on Tuesday… Defender Ally Kenney netted a pair of goals in the win… Goalie Melissa Sanger made four saves in 90 minutes… The Explorers went 9-8-3 last season and were picked to finish eighth in the Atlantic 10 preseason poll… Midfielder Traci DePasquale was named to the A-10 Preseason All-Conference First Team… She tied forward Dana O’Brien for the team lead with 20 points in 2008.

 

The Series: UMBC leads the all-time series with the Explorers, 2-1-0, but the teams have not met since 1991, a 1-0 victory for the host Retrievers.
