Morgan Warrington finishes the season with a team-high five goals and 11 points after scoring twice at Albany.

ALBANY, N.Y.—UMBC sophomore forward Morgan Warrington (Magnolia, Del./St. Thomas Moore Prep) scored twice and the UMBC women’s soccer team notched a season-high four goals to conclude the season with a 4-3 victory over America East rival Albany Sunday afternoon at the Great Danes’ Varsity Field.

The Retrievers finish the season 3-16-0 overall and 2-6-0 in America East play, as the win snapped a month-long seven-game losing streak. The Great Danes fell to 3-17-0 overall and 1-7-0 in the conference.

UMBC got on the scoreboard first when sophomore defender Erin Johnson’s (Eagleville, Pa./Methacton) shot from the top of the box was redirected into the goal by a Great Dane defender early in the seventh minute.

Ten minutes later, freshman midfielder Danielle Kell (Willards, Md./Parkside) fed Warrington down the middle, and Warrington sent a low shot past Albany goalie Amber Maisonet.

The Great Danes cut the lead in half on a corner kick in the 20th minute. After midfielder Rebecca Lee took the corner from the left side, the ball was intercepted in the air by UMBC senior keeper Christine Bacinski (Hampstead, Md./Mount de Sales). However, the referee ruled the entire ball had crossed the goal line when she landed, and Lee was credited with the tally.

Albany tied the game early in the 39th minute when midfielder Katie Grant took a pass from forward Teresa Boring and potted her shot in the back of the net. Then, less than three minutes later, Lee added her second goal of the match on a free kick after a Retriever foul to give the Great Danes a 3-2 lead at halftime.

But the Retrievers, who had not scored more than one goal in a game all season before Sunday, knotted the match at 3-3 when junior midfielder JoAnne Jackson (Portland, Ore./Lincoln) sent the ball to freshman forward Brooke Piper (London, Ontario/A.B. Lucas), who tallied her second goal in as many games in the 67th minute.

With the clock winding down and overtime looming, Warrington fired in the game-winner off the post with just 1:04 remaining in the game. Sophomore midfielder Sandra Vacarino (Mantua, N.J./Clearview Regional) was credited with the assist.

Warrington became the first Retriever to score multiple goals in a game since Caitlyn Slattery accomplished the feat against Howard on Sept. 12, 2007. The sophomore finishes the season with a team-high five goals and 11 points, the most by a Retriever since Jessica Young compiled the same totals in 2006.

In her final appearance for the Retrievers, Bacinski made seven saves, while Maisonet also stopped seven shots.

The Great Danes outshot the Retrievers, 29-18, and held an 8-2 advantage on corner kicks. UMBC’s 18 shots were a season high.
