ELON, N.C.—The UMBC women’s soccer team (1-8-0) dropped its fourth straight match Friday evening, falling to Elon (4-2-0) by a score of 2-0 at Rhodes Stadium.

Despite a 9-1 edge in first-half shots, the Phoenix did not find the back of the net until the 45th minute. With just 51 seconds remaining before the break, Katina Boozer brought the ball down the right side of the field, crossed the ball through the box to Molly Calpin, who touched it on to Susannah Gianakos. Gianakos then blasted the shot for the 1-0 lead.

In the 78th minute, Amanda Jones collected the ball off a UMBC defender and played it up the field to Brittany Hallberg, who converted for the score.

UMBC freshman goalie Mo Van Vlerah (Boyds, Md./Northwest) recorded seven saves, while Elon’s Sydney Little stopped three shots.

The Phoenix outshot the Retrievers, 12-5, and held a 3-1 advantage on corner kicks.

The Retrievers return to action on Wednesday, when they head to Philadelphia to take on the University of Pennsylvania at 5 p.m.
