Morgan Warrington's first goal of the season was the fourth of her career.

BALTIMORE—UMBC sophomore back Morgan Warrington (Magnolia, Del./St. Thomas Moore Prep) scored a goal in the 74th minute and the Retriever defense was strong down the stretch as the UMBC women’s soccer team (1-4-0) picked up its first victory of the season with a 1-0 win over Sacred Heart (0-4-0) Friday evening at a soggy UMBC Stadium.

Both teams had several of chances in the first half, but each goalie came up with some big saves, sending the game to halftime with a scoreless tie.

But in the 74th minute, just 30 seconds after Sacred Heart forward Leigh Dogmantis’ shot hit the crossbar, Warrington got loose on a breakaway at midfield and sent the ball to the lower far corner of the net for the Retrievers’ first goal of the season.

The Retriever defense fended off two Pioneer shots in the final 16 minutes and held on for their first victory.

Senior goalie Christine Bacinski (Hampstead, Md./Mount de Sales) recorded six saves in the game, while Sacred Heart keeper Meghan Reichelt made five stops. Bacinski recorded her third career shutout and UMBC’s first shutout since Sept, 12, 2007, against Howard. In addition, it was the first solo shutout for a Retriever goalie since Catie Bukowski (Odenton, Md./Arundel/South Carolina) blanked Albany on Oct. 9, 2005. Bacinski’s last shutout occurred on Sept. 9, 2005, against St. Peter’s.

The teams were even with nine shots apiece, while UMBC held a 7-4 advantage on corner kicks.

The Retrievers return to action next Friday, Sept. 12, when they host Richmond at 4 p.m. at UMBC Soccer Stadium.
