BALTIMOREThe UMBC women’s soccer team will play its only game of the season under the lights of UMBC Stadium Friday evening when the Sacred Heart Pioneers come to Baltimore. Kick-off is scheduled for 7 p.m.

Last Time Out: The Retrievers dropped both games of last weekend’s D.C. Invitational at Georgetown. UMBC fell to the host Hoyas, 7-0, on Friday and to American, 1-0, on Sunday. Senior goalie Christine Bacinski (Hampstead, Md./Mount de Sales) tied her career high with eight saves against Georgetown, which was ranked sixth in the Mid-Atlantic region, while freshman keeper Mo Van Vlerah (Boyds, Md./Northwest) tied her season high with six stops against the Eagles. UMBC did not allow a first-half goal to American, the first time the Retrievers have held their opponent scoreless through halftime this season.

Pioneer Points: Sacred Heart is 0-3-0 on the season and coming off a 6-0 loss to Seton Hall on Saturday at the Army Invitational. Midfielder Leigh Dogmantis scored the Pioneers’ only goal of the season in a 2-1 loss to Army on Aug. 28. Goalie Meghan Reichelt has posted a 3.52 goals-against average and a .621 save percentage with 18 stops. Sacred Heart was picked to finish fifth in the Northeast Conference preseason poll after going 5-12-4 and advancing to the league title game in 2007.

The Series: Sacred Heart holds a 3-1-2 series lead over UMBC. The Retrievers’ lone victory came in the teams’ first meeting, 2-0, on Sept. 5, 1999. UMBC and Sacred Heart met each year from 1999-2002 as Northeast Conference rivals. The teams played to a 1-1 draw last season on Sept. 21 in Fairfield, Conn., in their first meeting since 2002. UMBC forward Ashley Singer (Baltimore, Md./Kenwood) scored in the 80th minute to send the game into overtime after Sacred Heart led for most of the game.
