Retrievers Blanked by Bucknell, 3-0, in Womenís Soccer Opener
BALTIMOREóBucknell scored twice in less than two minutes midway through the first half and defeated UMBC, 3-0, in both teamsí season opener Friday afternoon at UMBC Soccer Stadium.
The Bison outshot the Retrievers, 14-3, including 10-1 in the first half, and they held a 9-0 advantage on corner kicks.
Defense dominated the first 30 minutes of the game until Bucknell forward Jennifer Dervarics collected a pass from teammate Brooke Stokes late in the 32nd minute and placed the ball into the lower left corner of the net for the first goal of the game.
Less than two minutes later, the Bison were granted a corner kick, which defender Nicole Marotta slipped just past UMBC senior goalie Christine Bacinski (Hampstead, Md./Mount de Sales) with a header. Midfielder Chelsea Brinkman was credited with the assist.
Bucknell took the 2-0 lead into halftime, but added a third goal in the 73rd minute when Brinkman took a pass from forward Kelliann Doherty at the top of the box and fired a straight shot past Bacinski.

Bacinski finished with four saves, all in the first half, while Bucknell goalie Kathryn Sutton stopped one shot.
The Retrievers hit the road for the first time this season to take on Villanova at 4 p.m. on Sunday.
