8/15/2008

BALTIMORE—Head women’s soccer coach Alyssa Radu announced today that local product Sarah Sample has joined the Retriever staff as a volunteer assistant coach.

“Joining Coach Radu’s staff at UMBC is a great learning opportunity for me,” Sample said. “I am very excited to be a part of this program and I look forward to having a great season.”

Sample was a four-year starter at George Washington University and the University of Maryland. She played her first two seasons at George Washington, earning Atlantic-10 All-Rookie Team honors in 2003 and All-Conference First Team accolades in 2004, when she led the Colonials with six goals and 14 points.

Sample transferred to Maryland before her junior season and led the Terps with four assists as a senior. She finished her collegiate career with 12 goals, 10 assists and 34 points.

Sample has also played in the W-League – the highest professional women’s soccer league in the United States – since 2004. She was a member of the Washington Freedom for three years and played for the Ottawa Fury this summer. Her coaching experience includes the Bethesda Soccer Club and University of Maryland Soccer Camps.

The native of Annapolis, Md., and former standout at St. Mary’s High School graduated from Maryland in December 2007 with degrees in criminal justice and women’s studies.

“Sarah is coming from very established programs, and I think that mentality will help her transition into our program,” Radu said.
