10/22/2007

Ashley Singer scored her team-best fourth goal of the season agaisnt Vermont.

BOSTON—UMBC women’s soccer freshman forward Ashley Singer (Baltimore, Md./Kenwood) was named America East Rookie of the Week for the week ending Oct. 21, the conference announced Monday. The award is the first America East honor of Singer’s career, and the first of the season for the Retrievers.

Singer gave the Retrievers a 1-0 lead against Vermont on Sunday, scoring UMBC’s first goal in seven games. In the 35th minute, Singer collected a cross in the box and sent the ball into the upper-left corner of the net for her team-best fourth goal of the season. She took a game-high seven shots on the day.

Singer ranks among the league leaders in a number of categories, including goals (T-5th, 4), goals per game (T-5th, 0.31) and points per game (T-9th, 0.52). She also leads her team with four goals, eight points and 45 shots.

The Retrievers defeated the Catamounts, 2-1, snapping a nine-game winless streak. The victory was also UMBC’s first over an America East opponent since Oct. 9, 2005.

The Retrievers conclude their 2007 schedule with three games this week. They host their final non-conference opponent when Pennsylvania comes to UMBC Soccer Stadium on Tuesday at 3 p.m., then travel to America East rival Binghamton on Thursday before returning home for the season finale against league foe Albany on Sunday.
