Women's Soccer Opens America East Play at Stony Brook Sunday

BALIMORE- The UMBC women’s soccer team (1-6-2) travels to Stony Brook (3-2-3) on Sunday, Sept. 30 at 1 p.m. to open 2007 America East Conference play.
Looking Back: The Retrievers tied Sacred Heart, 1-1 in double overtime on Sept. 21, and lost at Army, 1-0, on Sept. 23. Freshman forward Ashley Singer (
On the Seawolves: Stony Brook has recorded three straight 0-0 double-overtime draws including its last game against Manhattan on Sept. 26. The Seawolves are currently ranked 13th in the Northeast Region, their highest ranking ever. Sophomore goalkeeper Marisa Viola has five shutouts on the season, including three in a row, and was named America East Player of the Week on Sept. 24. The Seawolves were picked seventh in the America East preseason poll.
Last time vs. the Seawolves: On Oct. 1, 2006, the Seawolves’ Kristin Mishrell scored in the 35th minute to lead Stony Brook to a 1-0 victory over the Retrievers.
All-Time vs. the Seawolves: The Retrievers are 3-4-1 all-time against Stony Brook dating back to 1990.
Beasts in the America East: Junior goalkeeper Catie Bukowski (Odenton, Md./Arundel/South Carolina) ranks fourth in the America East in save percentage (.839) and 5th in goals against average with 0.97 goals allowed per game. Freshman forward Ashley Singer is tied for fourth in the conference in goals (3) and in goals per game (0.43). She is also fifth in points per game (0.86) and tied for fifth in points (6).
As a team, the Retrievers are second in goals scored (10), points (27) and shots (133) and rank third in assists with (7).
Fabulous Freshmen: Eight out of the nine Retriever goals this season have been scored by freshmen. Forward Ashley Singer leads the team with three goals. Forward Sandra Vacarino (Mantua, N.J./Clearview Regional) and midfielder Caitlyn Slattery (Williamsport, Pa./Williamsport) each have two goals, while forward Meagan Rivera (Fairport, N.Y./Penfield) and defender Morgan Warrington (Magnolia, Del./St. Thomas More Academy) have added one apiece.
Moving Up the Ranks: Senior forward Jessica Young (Waldorf, Md./Thomas Stone) ranks fifth all-time at UMBC with 23 career goals scored. She is also tied for sixth all-time with 55 career points.
