Ashley Singer gave the Retrievers an early lead with her second goal of the season.

RICHMOND, Va.The UMBC women’s soccer team (1-4-1) took an early lead, but it would not hold up as host Richmond (0-4-1) tied the score 10 minutes later, and the teams played to a 1-1 double-overtime draw Saturday afternoon at First Market Stadium.

After missing two games due to injury, freshman forward Ashley Singer (Baltimore, Md./Kenwood) scored her second goal of the season in the 13th minute, blasting a shot from more than 20 yards out into the upper left corner, out of the reach of Richmond goalie Kate Hudson.

But the Spiders responded less than 10 minutes later when Jen Ruhe collected a pass from teammate Jessie Knight, took a touch and ripped a shot into the left corner of the net, tying the game at 1-1.

Neither team could score throughout the second half or either overtime period, giving both squads their first tie of the season.

The Spiders out-shot the Retrievers, 23-10, including 12-5 in the second half, but junior goalie Catie Bukowski (Odenton, Md./Arundel/South Carolina) made a season-high seven saves. Hudson stopped five shots for Richmond. UMBC held a 4-3 advantage on corner kicks.

The Retrievers return to action Sunday, when they head to Raleigh, N.C., to take on North Carolina State at 4 p.m.
