Women’s Soccer Blanks Howard, 3-0, for First Victory of Season

Freshman midfielder Caitlyn Slattery came off the bench and scored her first two career goals as the UMBC women’s soccer team (1-4-0) notched its first victory of the season over Howard (0-4-0), 3-0, on Wednesday afternoon at UMBC Soccer Stadium.
In the 30th minute, sophomore midfielder JoAnne Jackson crossed the ball to freshman midfielder Megan McDonald on the right side, who found Slattery right in front of the net.
Freshman forward Sandra Vacarino scored her second goal of the season in the 40th minute, when the ball bounced off the defense to Vacarino right in front of the net. She fired a low shot past Bison goalkeeper Jessamyn Perkins to give the Retrievers a 2-0 lead right before halftime.
In the second half, Slattery received a pass from sophomore midfielder Katie McKay at the top of the penalty area and launched a long range shot past Perkins in the 52nd minute.
The Retrievers played the role of aggressor, out-shooting the Bison 23-9 including three by senior forward Jessica Young.
Howard had nine shots in the game, but the defense led by senior defender Alexis Rogowsky kept the Bison to very few good chances. Junior goalkeeper Catie Bukowski recorded four saves in the first half for the win, while junior goalkeeper Christine Bacinski banked one save in the second half. Perkins had 10 saves for the Bison.
UMBC had one corner kick in the match, while Howard had two.
