11/2/2006

Mary Hearin earns Academic All-District honors for the second consecutive year.

Baltimore-UMBC senior midfielder Mary Hearin was selected to the ESPN the Magazine Women’s Soccer Academic All-District II University Division First Team, the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) announced Tuesday. Hearin now advances to the national ballot, where she will compete with members of each all-district first team for Academic All-America recognition.

Hearin earns Academic All-District status for the second straight season, as she was a member of the All-District II Second Team in 2005.

Hearin anchored UMBC’s backline for three seasons before making the switch to midfield this year. She started 13 of 18 games in 2006 and scored a career-high three goals and six points, including one game-winner. For her career, the two-time team co-captain started 63 of 69 games with five goals, four assists and 14 points.

Hearin was selected to the 2003 America East All-Rookie Team and All-Conference Second Team, as well as the 2005 America East All-Championship Team. She was also named 2005 team co-Unsung Hero at the varsity awards banquet last spring.

Hearin excels in the classroom, as well, compiling a 3.86 cumulative grade-point average in four years. She graduated Magna Cum Laude and Phi Beta Kappa in May 2006 with a degree in history and is currently attending graduate school at UMBC for historical studies. A member of the National Society of Collegiate Scholars, the Golden Key International Honor Society and Chi Sigma Alpha, the National College Athlete Honor Society, Hearin has earned semester academic honors seven times and has achieved Dean’s List five times, and her name was published in the National Dean’s List in 2005-06. She also garnered recognition on the America East Commissioner’s Honor Roll in 2005.

Hearin served two terms as president of UMBC’s Student-Athlete Advisory Council (SAAC) and attended UMBC’s Leadershape Conference in 2004 and the NCAA Leadership Conference in 2005. She also participates in UMBC’s mentoring program.
