Kali Schwartz scored with just two seconds left in regulation to send the game into overtime against Vermont.

Burlington, Vt.-UMBC sophomore back Kali Schwartz scored with just two seconds remaining in regulation to send the game into overtime, but Vermont’s Carson Laderoute put back a rebound on the goal line five minutes later to hand the Retrievers (4-11-1, 0-6-0 America East) their fifth straight loss Sunday afternoon in America East women’s soccer action on the Catamounts’ Senior Day.

The game was scoreless until the 40th minute when the Catamounts (4-8-3, 2-2-2 America East) were awarded a penalty kick, which Jenny Solberg buried into the back of the net to give Vermont a 1-0 lead.

The Catamounts held that lead for almost the entire rest of the game until the Retrievers were awarded an indirect kick from three feet off the goal, which Schwartz knocked in to tie the game at 1-1 and force overtime. The goal was her career-high fourth of the season.

Five minutes into the extra session, Vermont’s Cassandra VanLeeuwen collected a ball along the end line and fired a shot that rebounded off UMBC senior goalie Robin Babaris. Laderoute was there to put back the rebound from just off the goal line to give the Catamounts the 2-1 victory.  

Babaris recorded a season-best 10 saves, just one off her career high. Laura Kissock started the game in the net for Vermont and made four stops in the first half. Eliza Bradley relieved Kissock in the second half and finished out the game with four saves of her own, while allowing the Retrievers’ only goal of the game.

The Catamounts out-shot the Retrievers, 21-15, including 4-0 in the five-minute overtime. The teams were even with four corner kicks apiece.

The Retrievers return to action Thursday, Oct. 19, when they host defending America East champion Boston University at 3 p.m. at UMBC Soccer Stadium.
