College Park, Md.-The UMBC women’s soccer team (1-2-1) lost to 25th-ranked Maryland, 6-0, Monday afternoon at Ludwig Field. The game was originally scheduled for Sunday evening but was postponed due to heavy rain in the area during the weekend.

Midfielder Melissa Hornfeck scored twice for the Terrapins (2-1-1) and added an assist. Midfielder Sarah Sample got the Terps on the board early as Stevie Dunning sent a long cross from the left wing to the right side of the UMBC penalty box where Sample ran onto the ball and finished it into the upper half of the Retriever goal in the third minute.

A little more than three minutes later Maryland forward Kelly Rozumalski gave the Terps a 2-0 lead, chipping the ball over Retriever goalkeeper Catie Bukowski from 25 yards out.

Hornfeck got into the scoring act in the eighth minute of play. Sample started the play with a pass through the center of the UMBC defense that found Hornfeck's feet, and she finished with a chip into the net from 12 yards out.

The Terps took a 4-0 lead in the 26th minute when midfielder Emily Maynard scored with assists from Amanda Paizs and Rozumalski.

Hornfeck scored her second of the game in the 51st minute after beating the UMBC keeper one-on-one. Maynard tallied the assist after setting up the goal with a pass through the center of the Retriever defense.

UMBC was able to hold off the Maryland attack for most of the second half until the 85th minute, when defender Lauren Gamble scored on a long shot that eluded the reach of Retriever keeper Robin Babaris.

Bukowski allowed three goals in just over 15 minutes of play before being relieved by Babaris, who stopped nine Maryland shots while allowing three goals in her first game action in more than a year. A three-year starter, the fifth-year senior sat out the entire 2005 season with a torn ACL.

Nikki Resnick played the first half in the net for Maryland and picked up one save. Mary Casey finished the game for the Terps.

The Terps out-shot the Retrievers, 25-6, and held a 6-1 advantage on corner kicks.

The Retrievers return to action Friday, Sept. 8, as they return home to face Temple at 4 p.m. at UMBC Soccer Stadium.
