8/29/2006

Amy Morrison and the Retrievers hit the road this week for two games.

Baltimore-The UMBC women’s soccer team hits the road this week for games against Longwood on Wednesday, Aug. 30 at 5 p.m., and Maryland on Sunday, Sept. 3 at 7 p.m. The Retrievers are 1-1-0 on the season and coming off a thrilling 2-1 overtime victory over Rider on Sunday.

Looking Back: The Retrievers played two games on opening weekend and both ended in exciting fashion. On Friday UMBC dropped its season opener, 1-0, to George Washington, when Colonial forward Meg Pyle broke a scoreless tie with just 33 seconds remaining in regulation. Two days later, junior forward Jessica Young scored the game-winner nine minutes into the first overtime period. Freshman forward Michelle Worrest put the Retrievers up, 1-0, early in the second half, but Rider’s Alison Brody tied it up in the 75th minute to send it to overtime. Despite a barrage of shots by the Broncs’ offense, sophomore goalies Christine Bacinski and Catie Bukowski combined to record 11 saves.

On the Lancers: Longwood is 1-1-0 on the season, with a 3-0 season-opening loss to Liberty on Friday and a 3-2 overtime victory over Wofford on Sunday. Wofford led 1-0 at halftime and took a 2-1 lead in the 82nd minute, but the Lancers tied it up with less than two minutes remaining in regulation. Freshman Sarah Fening scored the game-winner for Longwood five minutes into the extra period. The Lancers return nine starters and 13 players overall from last year’s squad, which went 7-9-1. Longwood enters its final season of its four-year Division-I reclassification. The Lancers will compete in the United Soccer Conference for the second year. Freshman Tia Nardella was named USC Newcomer of the Week after scoring a goal and adding an assist on the game-winner in Longwood’s win over Wofford.

Last Time vs. the Lancers: Last year, the Retrievers defeated Longwood, 1-0, at UMBC Stadium. Jessica Young scored in the 47th minute on a pass from Andrea Perkinson. The Lancers out-shot UMBC, 12-9, and held a 4-3 advantage on corner kicks, but goalie Catie Bukowski tallied nine saves and earned her first collegiate shutout.

UMBC vs. Longwood All-Time: Last season’s 1-0 Retriever victory was the first-ever meeting between the two teams.

On the Terps: Maryland is 1-1-0 on the season, with a 1-0 season-opening victory over 10th-ranked Tennessee on Friday and a 3-0 loss to No. 1 UCLA on Sunday at the Penn State Classic. Freshman midfielder Emily Maynard scored in the 72nd minute against the Lady Vols to break a scoreless tie and give the Terps the upset victory. After finishing last season 5-11-3 overall and 3-5-2 in league play, Maryland was picked to finish eighth in the Atlantic Coast Conference preseason coaches’ poll. The Terps are ranked 25th in the nation by Soccer America and ninth in the Mid-Atlantic region by SoccerBuzz.com. Maryland returns seven starters and 14 players overall from the 2005 squad, including all-ACC goalkeeper Nikki Resnick.

Last Time vs. the Terps: The Retrievers have not faced the Terrapins since 1999, when Maryland handed UMBC a 6-1 loss in College Park.

UMBC vs. Maryland All-Time: The Retrievers and Terrapins have met 10 times, with Maryland winning nine of those contests. The teams met every year from 1988 through 1996, and UMBC’s only win was a 2-1 victory in 1989.

Moving Up the Ranks: With her game-winner in overtime against Rider, junior forward Jessica Young moved into sole possession of eighth place all-time at UMBC with 19 career goals scored and also joined the Retrievers’ top-10 list for points with 43 in her two-plus years in black and gold. Junior midfielder Amy Morrison is among UMBC’s best in assists, ranking 10th all-time with eight helpers.
