Mary Hearin scored the Retrievers' only goal in their America East quarterfinals loss to Binghamton.

Boston, Mass.-Defending conference champion and third-seeded Binghamton scored two unanswered goals, including the game-winner by Kim Povill in the 97th minute, to defeat UMBC, 2-1, in the first round of the America East Women’s Soccer Championships at Boston University’s Nickerson Field Friday afternoon. The Retrievers finish the season 9-9-1 overall and 3-5-1 in conference play.

UMBC got on the board first, as junior back Mary Hearin (North Potomac, Md./Watkins Mill) converted a corner kick off the foot of sophomore midfielder Amy Morrison (Crofton, Md./South River) to give the Retrievers a 1-0 lead at the 18:59 mark. The goal was Hearin’s first of the season, while it was Morrison’s team-leading fifth assist of the year. It was the Retrievers’ first goal since their regular season game at Binghamton on Oct. 13, a span of five games.

The Bearcats tied the score at the 57:30 mark, when Danielle White headed a Kelly Sanders corner kick to the back of the net. With neither team scoring over the final 32:30 of regulation, the game was sent into overtime, where the Retrievers were 0-2-0 in this season heading into the conference tournament.

In the extra period, Povill took a pass from teammate Lauren Massey at the 97:11 mark and fired it from 35 yards out. Povill’s shot hit the underside of the crossbar and broke the plane of the goal to give Binghamton the 2-1 victory.

Freshman goalie Catie Bukowski (Odenton, Md./Arundel/South Carolina) recorded six saves, while her counterpart, Kristie Bowers, stopped four Retriever shots.

Binghamton out-shot UMBC, 17-10, and held a 7-2 advantage on corner kicks.

The Bearcats improve to 10-6-3 on the season and advance to the semifinals, where they will take on second-seeded Maine at 2:30 p.m. Sunday. Earlier in the day, New Hampshire defeated Vermont, 1-0, in double overtime in the first quarterfinal match. The Wildcats advance to Sunday’s semifinal and will take on host and No. 1 seed Boston U. at 12 p.m.
