UMBC WOMEN’S SOCCER FALLS TO VERMONT, 1-0, ON SENIOR DAY TO SNAP FIVE-GAME UNBEATEN STREAK

10/16/2005

  • Box Score

Catie Bukowski recorded eight saves in the Retrievers' 1-0 loss to Vermont.

Baltimore, Md.-The UMBC women’s soccer team (9-6-1, 3-2-1 AE) dropped its home finale to America East rival Vermont (8-6-1, 4-1-1 AE), 1-0, Sunday afternoon at a windy UMBC Stadium. The loss snaps the Retrievers’ five-game unbeaten streak which saw them win four in a row before tying Binghamton in a rain-shortened contest on Thursday. The loss also drops the Retrievers to fifth in the conference standings, while Vermont jumps into a tie for first place. The teams had been tied for third before the game.

Before the game, the Retrievers honored their three seniors, Kelly Fiorani (Eldersburg, Md./Liberty), Jessica Golibart (Olney, Md./Good Counsel) and Missy Moore (Silver Spring, Md./Good Counsel), who were playing in front of their home fans for the last time.

After the teams played to a scoreless tie in the first half, with each team taking seven shots, Vermont’s Nikkie Hessney collected a loose ball off a corner kick and knocked it past UMBC freshman goalie Catie Bukowski (Odenton, Md./Arundel/South Carolina) at the 60:07 mark for what proved to be the game-winner.

Bukowski totaled eight saves on the day, while Vermont keeper Laura Kissock stopped three UMBC shots.

The Catamounts out-shot the Retrievers, 11-9, and held a 5-2 advantage on corner kicks.

The Retrievers return to action Thursday, Oct. 20, when they travel to Boston to take on league-leading Boston University. Game time is 4 p.m.
