Amanda DiCarlo's goal in the 86th minute gave the Retrievers a 1-0 victory.

Baltimore, Md.-Junior forward Amanda DiCarlo (Niagara Falls, Ontario, Canada/St. Paul’s) scored in the 86th minute of play to give the UMBC women’s soccer team (8-5-0, 2-1-0 America East) a 1-0 victory over America East foe Hartford (3-9-1, 1-1-1 America East) Thursday afternoon at UMBC Stadium. Off to their best 13-game start under head coach Michelle Salmon, the Retrievers have won three in a row and seven of their last nine games after a 1-3 start to move a season-best three games above .500. Their eight wins equal their 2004 season total.

Though both teams had several opportunities, the game remained scoreless until the Retrievers were awarded a corner kick, which freshman midfielder Cara Palmer (Odenton, Md.) sent to senior midfielder Jessica Golibart (Olney, Md./Good Counsel). Golibart headed the ball to DiCarlo, who converted it for her career-high seventh goal of the season at 86:43. Palmer and Golibart were each credited with their second assists of the year, and it was DiCarlo’s second game-winner of the season, as well.

Freshman goalie Catie Bukowski (Odenton, Md./Arundel/South Carolina) recorded five saves and notched her third career shutout and second in as many games. She has allowed just one goal in her last 270 minutes of play and improved her record to 5-2-0 on the season. Hartford goalkeeper Liz Cook tallied four saves.

The Hawks out-shot the Retrievers, 12-9, but UMBC held a 7-4 advantage on corner kicks.

The win gives Salmon 45 victories in her career and leaves her just one shy of becoming UMBC’s all-time winningest women’s soccer coach. Jamie Watson recorded 46 wins in five years with the Retrievers.

The Retrievers return to action Sunday, Oct. 9, when they host America East rival Albany at 1 p.m. at UMBC Stadium.
