UMBC’S JESSICA YOUNG NAMED AMERICA EAST PLAYER OF THE WEEK

10/3/2005

Jessica Young was named America East Player of the Week.

Boston, Mass.-UMBC sophomore forward Jessica Young (Waldorf, Md./Thomas Stone) was named America East Player of the Week on Monday for the week ending Oct. 2. Young scored three goals in two games this weekend, including both game-winners, as the Retrievers defeated Howard, 5-1, Friday evening before picking up their first conference victory of the season in a 3-0 shutout win over Stony Brook.

Young scored twice against Howard, giving UMBC a 2-0 halftime lead with the eventual game-winner, then adding another goal early in the second period. At Stony Brook, she scored the first goal of the contest and assisted on the second, her first dish of the season.

Young totaled seven points this weekend and leads the Retrievers with 10 goals, 21 points and five game-winning goals – all career highs – and 41 shots. She has scored the game-winner in each of UMBC’s last five victories.

The Retrievers are 7-5-0 overall and 1-1-0 in the America East. They have won six of their last eight games after starting the season 1-3, and they are off to their best 12-game start since 2001, when they also opened the season 7-5.

Young and the Retrievers return to action Thursday, Oct. 6, when they host America East foe Hartford (3-8-1, 1-0-1 America East) at 4 p.m. at UMBC Stadium.
