Jessica Young scored her team-leading fifth goal of the season in the Retrievers' 2-1 win over Rider.

Lawrenceville, N.J.-The UMBC women’s soccer team (4-4-0) moved back to .500 Sunday afternoon with a 2-1 victory over Rider (1-5-1) on the Broncs’ home field.

After a scoreless first half, freshman midfielder Kali Schwartz (Congers, N.Y./Clarkstown South) scored just over a minute into the second period, at the 46:05 mark, to give the Retrievers a 1-0 lead. It was her third goal of the season.

About 12 minutes later, at 58:23, sophomore forward Jessica Young (Waldorf, Md./Thomas Stone) converted a pass from senior forward Missy Moore (Silver Spring, Md./Good Counsel) to give UMBC a 2-1 advantage. The goal was Young’s team-leading fifth on the season and leaves her one away from tying her 2004 season total of six.

With her first assist of the year, Moore, the Retrievers’ active career scoring leader, now has 60 points in her career, moving her closer to Kristen Einarson’s 63 points for fourth place all-time.

The Broncs got on the board at 63:16, when Kayla Devlin took a pass from Kelli Burke to cut UMBC’s lead to 2-1, but the score stood for the rest of the game.

Each team had 11 shots, but Rider had a 5-3 advantage on corner kicks. Retriever freshman goalie Catie Bukowski (Odenton, Md./Arundel/South Carroll) tallied four saves in 90 minutes, while Rider netminder Kim Carter stopped seven shots.

The win was head coach Michelle Salmon’s 41st of her career, moving her to within five of Jamie Watson for the most victories in program history.

The Retrievers return to action Friday, Sept. 23, when they return home to host Longwood at 7 p.m. at UMBC Stadium.
