The Colonials out-shot the Retrievers 14-4 and had more corner kicks (6-3), but UMBC freshman goalie Christine Bacinski (Hampstead, Md./Mount de Sales) tallied six saves, equaling her total from Friday’s game, and earned her first collegiate shutout in only her second career game. George Washington goalie Anna Handzlik recorded three saves in the defeat.
“Christine really stepped up today,” UMBC head coach Michelle Salmon said. “Not only did she control the game, but she came up with big-time saves.”
Salmon also noted the strong play by junior Betsy Day (Gloucester, Mass./Gloucester), who had been bothered by a nagging injury going into the Liberty game and did not start, but played a full 90 minutes Sunday against the Colonials.
“Betsy Day absolutely had one of the most inspirational performances of any player I've ever seen in a UMBC uniform,” Salmon said. “She really stepped up her game and led us in the back today.”
