SOCCER'S McELLIGOTT, MOORE NAMED NEC ROOKIES OF THE YEAR
Somerset, NJ--UMBC freshmen Derek McElligott and Missy Moore both earned Northeast Conference Rookie of the Year awards in a vote of the league's coaches. Five men's players and three on the women's side earned All NEC honors. For the men, senior midfielder P.J. Wakefield and senior defender Andy Wells earned First Team honors, along with the aforementioned McElligott. Senior midfielders Ricky Brown and James Hamilton earned Second Team honors. In addition to Moore's First Team recognition, sophomore defender Kristin English earned a slot on the First Team, while sophomore defender Jessa Karko captured Second Team honors. McElligott earned three Rookie of the Week awards in the league as he led UMBC in scoring with 27 points (12g, 3a). He netted three game-winning goals as well as a pair of "hat tricks" for the Retrievers. Wakefield, in more of a defensive midfield role this season, repeated as a First Team selection, as he still contributed five goals and an assist in 2001. For Wells, it was his fourth consecutive First Team selection. Rock solid as a sweeper, Wells added four game-winning goals to his outstanding career resume at UMBC. Brown recorded 13 points after shifting from forward to midfield this season, while Hamilton led the league and was ranked eighth in the nation in assists with 10. Moore, one of the top freshman scorers in the nation, led the NEC in scoring with 14 goals and 4 assists. She tallied five game-winning goals, helping UMBC to its current eleven-game unbeaten streak. Both English and Karko spearheaded a Retriever defense that bottled up most NEC attacks this season and led UMBC to its first NEC Tournament appearance in three years.
