WOMEN’S SOCCER FALLS IN KEY AMERICA EAST GAME TO STONY BROOK, 2-0

Stony Brook, N.Y. – The UMBC Retrievers (6-7-1, 3-4-1 AEC) lost in a critical America East women’s soccer game to Stony Brook (7-10-1, 3-5 AEC) by a final score of 2-0 on Thursday afternoon at LaValle Stadium.  The Retrievers remain one spot out of the six-team tournament, just behind Binghamton who is 3-3-2 in the America East.    

Both teams played to a scoreless first stanza as the first bit of scoring took place five minutes into the second period with Jackie Anthony knocking a rebound into the back of the net at 50:19. Anthony cleaned up a shot by teammate Danielle Lewis whose original shot bounced off the Retriever post.  Lewis added an insurance goal for the Seawolves at the 68:29 mark to move Stony Brook a head by two.     

The Retrievers put some late pressure on Stony Brook, including a great scoring opportunity with 2:30 remaining in the game when Lori Quintavalle (Haddonfield, N.J./Haddonfield Mem.) rocketed a shot at the Seawolves net.  Unfortunately for the Retrievers, Seawolves goaltender Cindy Bennett was in perfect position to make the save, one of her seven on the day. 

Retriever goal minder Robin Babaris (Ontario, Canada/Sir Oliver Mowat) made six saves as Stony Brook barely outshot the Retrievers, 14-13. 

UMBC plays host to Northeastern in their America East regular season finale this Sunday, Nov. 2 at UMBC Soccer Stadium.
