Baltimore, MD – The UMBC women’s soccer team won for the second consecutive time as they shut out Howard (1-9) by a score of 1-0 in a non-league match this afternoon at the UMBC Soccer Pitch. With the win, the Retrievers improved to 2-5.
Howard threatened to score in the 15th minute when senior Tiffany Day (Piscataway, N.J./Piscataway) broke away and blasted a shot right onto the left side of the goalpost. A minute later, UMBC had an opportunity of their own, as junior Missy Moore (Silver Spring, Md./Good Counsel) snagged a rebound, but kicked it right onto the lower left side of the Bison post. Despite a combined 13 shots, neither team was able to tally a goal in the first period.
In the second half, Moore broke the scoreless tie after she took a pass from sophomore Jessica Golibart (Olney, Md./Good Counsel) five yards from the goal, and struck it past Bison keeper Lindsey Walton (Upper St. Clair, Pa./Upper St. Clair) at 51:28. UMBC would outshoot Howard 5-1 to end the half, allowing them to hold on to the victory.
Walton made seven saves for the Bison, while sophomore Robin Babaris (Ontario, Canada/Sir Oliver Mowat) stopped three at the Retriever net.
UMBC will travel to Albany on Wednesday, October 8 before returning home on Sunday, October 12, to host America East foe Vermont at
