Mary Hearin joins the UMBC soccer staff as a graduate assistant coach after an outstanding four-year career on the field for the Retrievers.

After anchoring the defense for three seasons as center back, Hearin made a smooth transition to the midfield for her senior year in 2006 and scored a career-high three goals and six points.

A three-time team co-captain, Hearin made an impact on the Retrievers’ squad from the beginning, earning America East all-rookie team and all-conference second team recognition in 2003. She also was selected to the 2005 America East All-Championship Team after scoring UMBC’s lone goal in a 2-1 overtime loss to Binghamton in the conference tournament quarterfinals, and she shared team Unsung Hero honors as a senior. Hearin started 63 of 69 games in her career, posting five goals, four assists and 14 points.

Hearin, who served two terms as president of the Student-Athlete Advisory Council (SAAC), also excelled in the classroom, earning ESPN the Magazine Academic All-District honors in both 2005 and 2006, including first team accolades as a senior.

The native of North Potomac, Md., and former standout at Watkins Mill High School graduated Magna Cum Laude and Phi Beta Kappa from UMBC in 2006 with a degree in history. She is currently attending graduate school at UMBC for historical studies.
