Women’s Soccer Falls, 3-1, in #AEWSOC Opener to Albany

BALTIMORE, Md. – In the America East conference opener for both teams, the UMBC women's soccer team fell, 3-1, to the two-time defending conference champion Albany Great Danes on Sunday, September 24. The Great Danes move to 3-7-0 overall and 1-0-0 in conference play, while the Retrievers fall to 2-5-3 overall and 0-1-0 in America East contests.


Albany scored the first goal of the game in the 34th minute after Caroline Kopp sent a free kick towards the middle of the box. Hailey Summers was able to put a head on it towards the left post, where Vivian Vega collected it and sent it into the net.


In the 43rd minute, freshman Meredith Webber (Yardley, Pa./Pennsbury) netted the equalizer after she headed a long kick from classmate Evie Kenna (Aldershot, England/Ashmanor) behind the goalkeeper to tie things up at 1-1 before the half.


The Retrievers looked to take the lead early in the second half after a header shot from freshman Elysia Paolillo (Holliston, Mass./Worcester Academy) went wide over the net. But, it was the Great Danes that would take a 2-1 lead in the 52nd minute after Gina Bracamonte collected the ball after it had previously hit the post.


Albany's final goal of the game came in the 75th minute after Kopp headed a ball toward the net that collided with the goalkeeper and Vega sent it in for the score.


Overall, the Great Danes outshot the Retrievers, 19-10, including an 11-3 advantage in the first half. Vega and Sophia Eifler led Albany with five shots each, while Webber, Paolillo, and senior Gabby Boehmer (Lebanon, Pa./Cedar Crest) had two each for UMBC.


In goal, Albany's Andrea Leitner moved to 3-5-0 on the year after making two saves on three shots faced in all 90 minutes of play. For UMBC, junior Leah Roth (Valencia, Pa./Pine-Richland) fell to 2-5-3 after allowing two goals but made five saves in 73:23 minutes of play, before freshman Jade Wilkins (Stoney Beach, Md./The Catholic High School) took over in net and made one save.


NEXT UP FOR THE RETRIEVERS: UMBC will return to the field as they travel to Maine for another America East matchup on Sunday, October 1. Kickoff is scheduled for 1 p.m.
