EMMITSBURG, Md. – The UMBC women's soccer team picked up its first win of the season on Sunday afternoon, defeating the Mount St. Mary's Mountaineers, 1-0, at Waldron Family Stadium in the Battle of Baltimore finale. The Retrievers move to 1-0-1 on the season, while the Mountaineers fall to 1-1-0.
"I'm very happy with the entire team today. They showed grit and determination and pulled out a win against a good team," said UMBC head coach Leslie Wray. "It was nice to get so many players playing time and it proved crucial to our win. I'm very proud of this team and their ability to earn an away win."
UMBC outshot The Mount, 14-12, but needed only a 30-yard boot from freshman Olivia Bronson (Gaithersburg, Md./St. Andrew's Episcopal) in the 43rd minute to wrap up the victory.
Both teams were able to get good looks on the ball early in the game, including two shots from senior Gabby Boehmer (Lebanon, Pa./Cedar Crest) and sophomore Nikki Saad (Hummelstown, Pa/Lower Dauphin). Junior Leah Roth (Valencia, Pa./Pine-Richland) made a huge save in the 28th minute that helped to keep the game tied at 0-0.
In the 43rd minute of the game, sophomore Rayven Conner (Ashburn, Va./Briar Woods) sent a free kick down field that Saad controlled before passing off to Bronson. From 30 yards out, Bronson booted the ball into the top left corner of the net for her first collegiate goal and gave UMBC a 1-0 lead going into halftime.
The second period began much like the first, as UMBC and The Mount sent a few shots around the net but couldn't get anything to connect. The biggest play of the half, however, came in the 69th minute after the Mountaineers took a corner kick and sent a header towards the net, but Roth was there to grab the ball to keep it away and preserve the Retrievers' lead.
On the day, Saad led UMBC with four shots, followed by Boehmer with three. For The Mount, Kayla Hughes and Gianna Pomykacz each tallied three shots. In goal, Roth registered her third career shutout while making three saves for the Retrievers, while the Mountaineers' Charlotte Elrod made three saves in all 90 minutes of play.
Roth, Bronson, Boehmer, and freshman Erin Stevenson (Sellersville, Pa./Pennridge) were all named to the Battle of Baltimore All-Tournament Team, following the conclusion of the weekends games.
Three Retrievers - Bronson, Kathryn Moormann (New Market, Md./Oakdale), and Elysia Paolillo (Holliston, Mass./Worcester Academy) – made their first appearances in a UMBC uniform, while classmate Meredith Webber (Yardley, Pa./Pennsbury) notched her first career start.
UP NEXT FOR THE RETRIEVERS: UMBC will return home to Retriever Soccer Park on Friday, August 25 as they host UNCW at 5 p.m. in a doubleheader, as the men's team opens the season against Bryant at 7:30 p.m.
