COLLEGE PARK, Md. – The UMBC women's lacrosse team fell in a Wednesday night matchup against #4/2 Maryland, 21-12. The Terrapins move to 3-1 on the season, while the Retrievers suffer their first loss of the season and fall to 3-1 overall.

The game started with a Maryland goal at the 28:39 mark, before junior Sara Moeller (Phoenix, Md./St. Paul's School for Girls) counteracted to tie the game up at 1-1.

The Terrapins rattled off six straight goals to take a 7-1 lead before junior Lauren McDonald (Catonsville, Md./Catonsville) ended the scoring run off an assist from Moeller.

Maryland scored two more goals to take a 9-2 lead before Moeller netted her second of the game. The teams engaged in a back-and-forth scoring battle before the half, ending with Maryland taking a 12-5 lead into the locker rooms.

Out of the gates in the second period, McDonald netted a feed from Moeller before Maryland scored on two straight free position shots to take a 14-6 lead.

McDonald brought the score within seven as she scored on her own free position shot, but another scoring battle would begin as the teams traded goals.

The Retrievers came within six as senior Taylor Oliver (Annapolis, Md./St. Mary's) and McDonald scored within a middle of each other to bring the score to 18-12. However, the Terps would score three straight in the final five minutes for the 21-12 win.

Moeller led the team with eight points off three goals and a game-high five assists, followed by McDonald with four goals. The Retrievers forced seven turnovers, including a team-high four from junior Kia Reinhardt (Frederick, Md./Frederick).

In goal, Maryland's Megan Taylor picked up the win, making six saves in 60 minutes of play. UMBC's Kelsey Major (Eldersburg, Md./Liberty) made 11 saves in the net.

The Retrievers will return to action on Saturday as they play host to American at UMBC Stadium. Game time has been moved from noon to 4 p.m.
