Women’s Lacrosse Adds Nine for the 2016 Campaign

BALTIMORE – UMBC women's lacrosse inked nine Maryland natives to National Letters-of-Intent to join the Retrievers for the 2016 campaign, as announced by co-head coaches Tony Giro and Amy Slade.

"As we continue our journey at UMBC, Amy, Alex and I are excited to welcome our second class of high-character student-athletes to Hilltop Circle," said co-head coach Tony Giro. "The vision for UMBC women's lacrosse is ingrained in this incoming group. Their goals align with what is important to us as a staff and what is important to the amazing young people we currently have in the program. We truly look forward to serving them and watching them grow as people and players."

Rachel Kehoe
M/A
White Hall, Md./Friends School of Baltimore

A four-year letterwinner in three sports at Friends School of Baltimore… Helped Friends School of Baltimore to its second Interscholastic Athletic Association of Maryland B Conference lacrosse championship in three years with three goals in the title game in 2014… A two-time IAAM B All-Conference selection in lacrosse, basketball and soccer… Only lacrosse freshman to earn Baltimore Metro Second Team honors in 2012… Played club ball for the Skywalkers.

Giro on Kehoe: "Rachel has the speed and awareness to be a tremendous two-way midfielder. She is tough, tenacious and very physical on both ends of the field, with a knack for winning 50/50 balls between the thirties. She is a three-sport athlete and a winner at everything she does. We know she will bring that winning mentality to UMBC."

Brittany Levine
M
Middletown, Md./Middletown

A letterwinner with the Middletown High School lacrosse team… Tallied 36 goals and nine assists in 2014 to earn Frederick News-Post All-Area First Team honors… Also named to the All-League First Team as a junior… Received All-Area Honorable Mention honors in 2013… Earned the 368 Fitness Scholarship as a sophomore… Won three straight Club National Championships with Frederick Stars Lacrosse.

Giro on Levine: "Brittany is a long, explosive athlete, who will be a great addition to a young, but very athletic midfield unit. On the surface, she adds much-needed depth at the center position, but beyond that we think she is a kid who can make major contributions on both ends of the field."

Lauren McDonald
M/A
Catonsville, Md./Catonsville

A four-year varsity starter at Catonsville High School… Named Catonsville Times Athlete of the Year in 2014… Also earned Attacker of the Year as a junior… Helped lead the Comets to a state semifinal appearance after pacing the squad with 49 goals and 31 assists… Earned three straight Maryland State 3A/4A regional championships… Also lettered in soccer and basketball at Catonsville High School… Played club ball for the Hero's.

Giro on McDonald: "Lauren has an understanding of the game that is far beyond most kids her age. She is truly a quarterback on the field and has the ability to get her teams into offense quickly. After suffering a tough knee injury, we took note of how hard she worked to recover. That may not seem substantial to some, but to us, it showed that competition makes this kid tick. She has returned and excelled in soccer, basketball and lacrosse."

Sara Moeller
A
Phoenix, Md./St. Paul's School for Girls

A three-sport letterwinner at St. Paul's School for Girls… Helped the Gators to the Interscholastic Athletic Association of Maryland A Conference final to McDonogh in 2013… Named to the Brine All-America Team twice… A two-time All-Star on the Brine National Team… Competed in the 2014 Underclass Crab Bowl… Played club ball with the Skywalkers.

Giro on Moeller: "Sara possesses outstanding field vision from many points on the field and has the ability to deliver the ball on target and on time while under pressure. She is a dual-threat on the attacking end in that she is equally skilled at attacking to score as she is attacking to draw a slide to find an open teammate. She is a three-sport athlete and the experience of playing against great competition in the IAAM will serve her well at the collegiate level."

Kia Reinhardt
M
Frederick, Md./Frederick

A four-year letter winner in lacrosse and indoor track at Frederick High School… Has scored 50 goals and 30 assists in three seasons with the Cadets… Tallied 28 goals and 12 assists to earn Frederick News-Post All-Area Second Team honors in 2014… An All-Area Honorable Mention in 2013… Won three straight Club National Championships with Frederick Stars Lacrosse.

Giro on Reinhardt: "Kia is a naturally gifted athlete, who is just scratching the surface on her ability to be a special lacrosse player. The strides she made over one summer with a stick in her hand really have us excited for the future. It also helps that she is an All-State caliber sprinter. How great she can ultimately become is really Kia's decision."

Kayla Renehan
D
Glenelg, Md./Glenelg

Two-year letterwinner in lacrosse at Glenelg High School… Has picked up 30 ground balls in 28 games played with the Gladiators… Named the team's Defensive Player of the Year in 2014… Earned Rookie of the Year honors with the Gladiators… Also lettered in soccer and indoor track at Glenelg… Competed in the 2014 Underclass Crab Bowl… Played club ball for the Hero's.

Giro on Renehan: "The first time we saw Kayla play, we knew we had to have her. No one brings more energy or passion to the field than her. She is a tough on-the-ball defender, but also possesses a great understanding of the team-defense concepts we like to use. We love kids who play with a chip on their shoulder, and that's exactly what Kayla does."

Catherine Sims
M
Elkridge, Md./Howard

A three-sport athlete at Howard High School… Helped the Lions to their first state semifinal appearance in 2013… Earned the Karl Wolf Award at the second annual tournament in 2013, hosted by Howard High School… Named to the All-Howard County Second Team by the Baltimore Sun in women's soccer… Played club ball for M and D.

Giro on Sims: "Catherine is a big, strong and fast three-sport athlete. She plays with a physicality that is rare for kids her age. One of our favorite things about Cat is her ability to communicate with and lead her teammates, especially during difficult situations. Her peers respond to her calming, positive demeanor and we are lucky that have her on our side."

Carly Tolino
GK
Middletown, Md./Middletown

A two-sport varsity athlete at Middletown High School… Named Defensive Player of the Year by the Frederick News-Post as a junior with a save percentage a 50.0 and a goals-against average of 7.7… Competed in the 2014 Underclass Crab Bowl… A two-time All-Area and All-Gazette First Team honoree… Named to the Baltimore Metro Second Team in 2013... Named to the 2014 All-Academic Team… An All-Gazette First Team honoree on the Knights' basketball team… Won three straight Club National Championships with Frederick Stars Lacrosse.

Giro on Tolino: "Carly not only possesses tremendous skill as a goalie, but she also has all the intangibles you look for in the position. She is a competitor. She is confident in and out of the cage. She is energetic. She is a communicator and she is a leader of her peers."

"Payton is a tremendous three-sport athlete who plays every possession like it could be her last. It will be fun to watch her continue to develop, but right now we are really excited about her length, athleticism and competitive nature."
