Women’s Lacrosse’s Kristen Bilney Named UMBC April Athlete of the Month
BALTIMORE – UMBC junior midfielder Kristen Bilney (Ellicott City, Md./Mt. Hebron) of the women's lacrosse team has been named the UMBC Athlete of the Month for April 2013, in a poll conducted from May 7-14. Bilney won the vote over baseball's Rob McCabe (Philadelphia, Pa./St. Joseph's Prep), men's lacrosse's Pat Young (Ewing, N.J./Christchurch School (Va.)), tennis' Daniel Gray (Bowie, Md./The Bullis School) and Josefin Stange-Jonsson (Vasteras, Sweden/De La Gardiegymnasiet), softball's Taylor Hall (Cosby, Va./Cosby) and track and field's Mercedes Jackson (Huntingtown, Md./Huntingtown) and Trae Proctor (Brandywine, Md./Thomas Stone).
In six April games, Bilney led the Retrievers with nine goals, including a five-goal effort as UMBC defeated America East rival Binghamton to start the month. In addition, she added four ground balls, seven draw controls, and five caused turnovers in the six contests.
For the season, the junior middie finished tied for second on the team with a career-high 28 goals. She also tallied ten assists to bring her season-total to 38 points, more than her first two seasons combined. A versatile player, Bilney picked up a team-best 26 ground balls in 2013 and caused 14 turnovers.
