BALTIMORE—UMBC head women's lacrosse coach Kelly Berger today announced the Retrievers' 2012 schedule, which is highlighted by three games against teams that advanced to the 2011 NCAA quarterfinals and three contests against in-state rivals.
"We are excited for the challenges our non-conference schedule brings," Berger said. "Facing many in-state rivals early in the year will prepare us for another competitive year of America East Conference play."
The Retrievers open the season at home on Feb. 19 against Florida, which reached the NCAA quarterfinals last season as the No. 4 seed.
UMBC visits cross-town foes Towson (Feb. 29), Loyola (March 10) and Johns Hopkins (April 25), renewing long-standing rivalries with each team.
Other non-conference games include rematches with 2011 opponents George Mason (Feb. 25, Fairfax, Va.), Duquesne (March 3, UMBC), Delaware (March 7, Newark, Del.) and American (April 17, UMBC). In addition, the Retrievers will host Colgate on March 14, playing the Raiders for the first time since 1994, and they will also visit Drexel on March 17 to take on the Dragons for the first time since 1998.
The Retrievers open their America East Conference slate against at home on March 24 against defending America East champion Albany, which did not lose a game before falling to eventual national champ Northwestern in the NCAA quarterfinals. UMBC also hosts Boston University (March 31) and Vermont (April 14) and will visit Stony Brook (April 4), Binghamton (April 7) and New Hampshire (April 21).
The top four teams in the conference advance to the America East Championships, which are May 3-5 at the home field of the No. 1 seed. Last season, the Retrievers reached the league title game for the second year in a row.
