4/25/2003
Baltimore, MD –
The Retrievers built a comfortable lead early in the match as Dragoni, senior Stephanie Allen, and freshmen Kelly Fiorani and Kate Worthington combined for seven goals within the first eleven minutes. Sacred Heart’s first tally came at 13:12 on a Michelle Bruckner goal. The Retrievers scored three more times in the first period, while sophomore JoAnn Montesarchio added another point for Sacred Heart, as they went into half-time, down 10-2.
In the second half, Sacred Heart outscored UMBC, 6-5, on goals from Bruckner, Montesarchio, Meghan Tucker, Christina Macchia, and Mary Romano. However, UMBC also generated a balanced offense, receiving contributions from Dragoni, Fiorani, freshman Jenny Kasper, and senior Lauren Traber, to secure the 15-8 victory.
Senior Courtney Stringer played all sixty minutes in the net for UMBC, stopping seven shots, while allowing eight goals. Pioneer goalkeeper Amy Lavoie saved ten in the Sacred Heart loss.
