TOWSON EDGES UMBC WOMEN’S LACROSSE, 10-9
4/15/2003
Baltimore, MD – Freshman Becky Trumbo (Eldersburg, MD/Liberty) scored all four of her goals in the second half to lead Towson (7-5, 1-4 CAA) to a 10-9 non-conference victory over UMBC (4-8, 3-1 NEC) tonight at UMBC Stadium.
The Retrievers took a 2-0 lead just inside the six-minute mark with unassisted goals by freshman Kate Worthington (Annapolis, MD/Old Mill) and senior Stephanie Allen (Mississauga, Ont./Universal). UMBC maintained the two-goal advantage as junior Jen Dragoni (Morton, PA/Ridley) scored at 19:53, allowing the Retrievers to go up, 4-2. However, Towson’s Kristyn Krastel (Jarrettsville, MD/North Harford) and Martha Dwyer (Camillius, NY/West Genessee) netted a goal a piece to enter halftime with a 4-4 tie.
In the second half, the Tigers were able to take an 8-6 with 13 minutes to go as Trumbo broke away to get a shot past UMBC keeper Courtney Stringer (Cockeysville, MD/Dulaney). The Retrievers were able to score three more times down the stretch, but Trumbo would score two more in the final nine minutes to secure the win for Towson.
With four goals and one assist on the day, Trumbo pulled to within two points of setting a new Towson school record for scoring in a single season.
Four different Retrievers had two points on the day, including Dragoni (2g), Allen (2g), Worthington (2g), and Lauren Hess (Bel Air, MD/C. Milton Wright), who had a goal and an assist. Stringer made nine saves in the UMBC net.
