3/8/2003
Baltimore, MD – UMBC (0-3) dropped its third straight, losing to Old Dominion (2-1) by a score of 13-10, this afternoon at the UMBC Stadium. Lady Monarch junior Janine Rodriguez (Davidsonville, MD/South River) exploded for six goals and also posted two assists to lead ODU.
Rodriguez netted the first two goals of the match, giving the Monarchs a 2-0 advantage just 16 minutes into the game. However, UMBC would tie it at two apiece behind the efforts of sophomore Annie Davis (Catonsville, MD/Catonsville) and freshman Kelly Fiorani (Sykesville, MD/Liberty). At 20:52, sophomore Melody Shotwell (Fairfax Station, VA/Lake Braddock) would regain the lead for Old Dominion, and would score two more in the first half, helping the Monarchs to a 7-2 halftime advantage.
ODU extended their lead to 13-5 with just seven minutes remaining in the game, but UMBC battled back to score five goals of their own in the last six minutes to pull to within three. Junior Emily Sawyer (Columbia, MD/Wilde Lake) added the last Retriever goal at 59:59, but UMBC’s effort came too late, as Old Dominion came away with the 13-10 win.
