Women's Lacrosse Rallies From Eight-Goal Second Half Deficit, but Falls Short at UNH, 12-11

Durham, N.H.- The UMBC women’s lacrosse team cut an eight-goal second half deficit to one on three occasions, but the Retrievers fell to host New Hampshire, 12-11, in their final America East contest of the regular season.

UMBC completed league play at 3-3 overall and remain in third place in the league standings. New Hampshire, Albany, and Vermont are all at 2-3 and will all play next Saturday. The Retrievers had their three-game winning streak snapped at three and slipped to 7-8 overall. UNH improved to 5-9 overall.

Senior midfielder Alicia Krause (Ellicott City, Md./Mount Hebron) led UMBC with four goals and an assist. Senior attacker Emily Coady (Westminster, Md./Westminster) and junior midfielder Lindsay Cox (High Bridge, N.J.) added two goals apiece.

Laura Puccia led UNH with four goals, while Kate Keagins had two goals and two assists.

The Retrievers are now 0-4 in one-goal decisions in 2012 and have lost three games by the sme 12-11 margin.

UNH led, 7-2, at the half and built the advantage to 10-2 with 23 minutes remaining. But UMBC went on a 7-0 run in just under a 10-minute span to close to within 10-9 with 11:39 remaining. Krause and Coady scored two goals apiece and sophomore midfielder Shannon Harkey (Purcellville, Va.) capped the surge with an unassisted tally.

But Puccia scored on a free position shot with 8:14 to play to restore a two-goal Wildcat lead. Krause answered that score with 2:26 remaining and UMBC got a golden opportunity to tie the score when UNH netminder Kathleen O’Keefe received a yellow card behind her own cage with 90 seconds to play. On the restart, Coady lost possession of the ball before she could get a shot off and the Wildcats went the length of the field, drew a foul with UMBC junior goalkeeper Kendall Mason (Lloyd Harbor, N.Y.) out of the net, and scored when Puccia put the ball into an empty net with 51 seconds to play.

Cox scored on a free position shot with 13 seconds remaining, but UNH won the ensuing draw and improved to 7-0 all-time at home vs. the Retrievers.

New Hampshire outshot UMBC, 28-21, and Mason recorded a career-high 11 saves in all 60 minutes of action.

The Retrievers close out the regular season at Johns Hopkins on April 25.
