Women's Lacrosse Welcomes Colgate for Wednesday Afternoon Contest
The UMBC womenís lacrosse team (2-4) returns home for a mid-week contest vs. the Colgate Raiders (1-5). The Retrievers play a pair of non-conference games this week before opening America East play on March 24. The opening draw at UMBC Stadium is set for 4:00 p.m. Live stats will be available, but there will be no video streaming for the UMBC-Colgate contest.
Scouting the Retrievers
UMBC scored a season-high 15 goals in a 15-6 rout at Delaware on March 7. Alicia Krause scored four goals and added a pair of assists to post a season-high six points. The Retrievers have defeated Delaware four consecutive times.
Abby Wilson scored a season-best four points (3g, 1a) in her first career three-goal effort. Wilson was named America East Conference Rookie of the Week for her four-point effort vs. Delaware and her stat-stuffing performance (1 goal, 2 gbís, 2 ctís, 3 draw controls)
A furious rally by UMBC fell just short, as the No. 16 Loyola Greyhounds held on to defeat the Retrievers, 12-11, at the Ridley Athletic Complex on March 10. Lindsay Cox continued her torrid play, leading UMBC with four goals, including cashing in on all three of her free position shots.
Cox now has 17 goals and 21 points on the season, already surpassing her season total (17) in points from 2011. She has four or more goals in three of six games this season and multiple points in five straight. Cox scored eight goals on only ten shots last week and was 3-of-3 in free posiiton shots vs. Loyola. She is ranked No. 27 in the nation in goals scored.
Sophomore midfielder Kristen Bilney is 25th in the nation in draw controls per game at 4.17.
The Retriever defense is ranked 27th in the nation with 9.83 goals allowed per game.
Scouting the RAIDERS
After opening the season with five consecutive losses, Colgate opened Patriot League play by defeating Lehigh, 13-9 at home on Saturday. Katie Sullivan and Courtney Miller each scored four goals for the Raiders and Sullivan added three assists. Colgate outscored Lehigh, 4-1 over the final 7:31 to secure the victory.
UMBC will be the third America East team that the Raiders have faced on the road in 2012. Stony Brook opened their season with a 13-10 win over Colgate and Vermont tallied 18 times in an 18-12 victory on Feb. 24.
Miller, who was credited with the game-winning goal vs. Lehigh, is averaging 3.0 goals and 4.0 points per game through six games. (18-6-24). She is also one of the team leaders in ground balls (13), draw controls (14) and has converted six of nine free position shots.
Sullivan has six goals on just 11 shots in five games played and is tied for the team lead with 6 assists. Kate Sheridan is also one of three Raiders with 6 helpers.
Colgate has won four Patriot League titles since 2004, with the most recent championship and NCAA Tournament appearance occurring in 2009.
Inside the Series
UMBC has not played Colgate since 1994. The Retrievers won that contest, 11-10, at UMBC Stadium. The Raiders had won the previous two meetings, in 1989 and 1990. All four meetings have taken place at UMBC Stadium.
UMBC heads to Philadelphia for a Sat., March 17 contest at Drexel (1:00 p.m.).
