Duquesne Rallies in Second Half to Defeat Women's Lacrosse, 11-8
BALTIMORE- Visiting Duquesne overcame a two-goal halftime deficit, and outscored UMBC, 6-1, in the second half to capture an 11-8 victory over the Retrievers at UMBC Stadium.
Senior midfielder Alicia Krause (Ellicott City, Md./Mount Hebron) led UMBC (1-3) with three goals and one assist against her former team. Junior middie Lindsay Cox (High Bridge, N.J.) scored once and added three assists.
Duquesne (2-2) sophomore attacker Haley Marafioti led all scorers with four goals and one assist.
The game featured two big runs by Duquesne, countered by one for the Retrievers. The Dukes broke an early 1-1 tie with a 4-0 surge and led 5-1 at the 17:20 mark of the first half. But the Retrievers countered, tying the game with four goals in a span of 1:53 to draw even on the second of back-to-back scores by Krause with 12:30 remaining in the half.
Goals by sophomore Taeler Errington (Valley Lee, Md./Leonardtown) and Cox completed a 6-0 run and gave the hosts momentum and a 7-5 halftime advantage.
But after a quick exchange of scores early in the second half, the Dukes re-established control and held UMBC scoreless for the final 23:37. Trailing 8-7, DUís Meredith Dunn tied the game at the 17:57 mark, and Marafioti gave the visitors the lead for good, cashing in an Elise Caldwell feed just 19 seconds later.
Marafioti and Dunn added insurance markers and neither team scored in the final 12:40 of play.
UMBC outshot Duquesne, 24-18, but Duke senior netminder Liz Walker made 13 saves in the cage.
Sophomore midfielder Kristin Bilney (Ellicott City, Md./Mount Hebron) added two goals for UMBC.
The Retrievers travel to Delaware to take on the Blue Hens on Wednesday at 4:00 p.m.
