Head Women’s Lacrosse Coach Kelly Berger Selected to 2011-12 U.S. National Team

BALTIMORE—UMBC head women’s lacrosse coach Kelly Berger was selected to the 2011-12 U.S. Senior Women’s National Team on Sunday following three days of tryouts at UMBC Stadium July 29-31.

More than 80 players competed at the tryout, and Berger was among 36 selected to the roster by U.S. Lacrosse.

“I am honored and humbled to be among the best players in the world and have the opportunity to represent the United States while playing the sport I am so passionate about,” Berger said.

Berger, who was a two-time collegiate All-American and a Tewaaraton Trophy nominee at James Madison, is in her seventh year with the national team.

The U.S. team program competes on an annual basis with tryouts held each summer. The team will compete at several events this year, including the Stars and Stripes Weekend in October and the Champion Challenge in January, and it will lay the foundation for the squad that will compete in the 2013 Federation of International Lacrosse (FIL) World Cup in Oshawa, Ontario.

“We’re really excited about the team we put together,” said Team USA head coach Ricky Fried, a UMBC alum. “The athleticism of each player individually and of the group of 36 collectively is just remarkable. We’re really looking forward to getting the squad together in October to begin putting the pieces together and laying the foundation for the 2013 FIL World Cup.”
