Women’s Lacrosse Standout Amanda Pappas Voted UMBC Athlete of the Month for May

    BALTIMORESenior midfielder Amanda Pappas of the women’s lacrosse team was named UMBC’s Athlete of the Month for May 2011 in a poll of fans conducted from May 31-June 6. Pappas received 258 of 360 total votes (71.7 percent) to outdistance herself from runner-up Katie Ferguson (44 votes, 12.2 percent). Michael Christmas and Amanda Deller of track and field and D.J. Ream of baseball were also nominated.

     

    Pappas was named to the All-Championship Team at the America East Tournament after scoring a team-best six goals and seven points in two contests, leading the Retrievers to their second straight league title game. The Pasadena, Md., native tallied five points in the semifinals, as UMBC rallied from a four-goal deficit to knock off defending champion Boston University.

     

    An America East All-Conference second team selection, Pappas led the Retrievers with a career-high 41 goals and ranked third on the team with a career-best 47 points in 2011. She scored at least one goal in the last 14 games of the season and posted a team-best nine hat tricks on the year. Pappas concluded her career ranked 12th all-time at UMBC with 114 goals and 15th with 141 points.
