BALTIMORE—The UMBC women’s lacrosse team (9-4) steps out of America East Conference play on Wednesday to host cross-town rival Johns Hopkins (7-5) at 6 p.m. at UMBC Stadium. The game will be streamed live at UMBCRetrievers.tv.

Last Time Out: The Retrievers sustained a late Catamount five-goal rally and held on to edge America East rival Vermont, 14-13, on Saturday. Junior midfielder Alicia Krause (Ellicott City, Md./Mount Hebron/Duquesne) led UMBC with five points on four goals and an assist, while junior attack Emily Coady (Westminster, Md./Westminster) and senior attack Erika Braerman (Fallston, Md./Fallston) each notched a hat trick. Senior goalie Natalie Rau (Forest Hill, Md./Fallston) made nine saves for the Retrievers.

On the Blue Jays: After a three-game winning streak, Johns Hopkins, who is receiving votes in the IWLCA poll for the third week in a row, has dropped two in a row, including a 14-10 loss to sixth-ranked Florida on Saturday. Midfielder Colleen McCaffrey had four points on three goals and an assist against the Gators, while goalie Cosette Larash finished with 10 saves, including eight in the first half. McCaffrey leads the Blue Jays with 29 goals, 36 points and 28 draw controls on the season, while defender Alyssa Kildare is tops with 29 ground balls and 20 caused turnovers. Larash has played all 720 minutes between the pipes and has posted an 8.75 goals-against average and a .426 save percentage with 78 saves.

Inside the Series: Wednesdays’ game marks the 23rd all-time meeting between the Retrievers and Blue Jays in a series that began in 1976. UMBC leads the all-time series, 12-8-2, but Johns Hopkins has won five straight and seven of the last eight meetings. The teams have not met since 2009, an 8-6 win for the host Blue Jays. Midfielder Amanda Pappas (Pasadena, Md./Chesapeake) led the Retrievers with two goals. Hopkins attacks Brianna Cronin and Brooke Foussadier each scored two goals to lead the hosts.

For Starters: UMBC is 9-4 after 13 games for the second year in a row. However, the Retrievers are 3-1 after four America East Conference games for the first time since 2006, when they won the league’s regular-season title.

Home Sweet Home: The Retrievers are 6-1 at home this season, averaging 12.14 goals per game and allowing just 8.29.

What a Week: Krause was named America East Player of the Week on Monday after scoring nine goals and 11 points in victories over league rivals Stony Brook and Vermont. She added five draw controls, four ground balls and three caused turnovers in the two games. The award is the first of Krause’s career and the second for a Retriever this season, as Braerman garnered the first honor of the year.

Century Mark: With her two goals against Stony Brook last Wednesday, Pappas became the 17th Retriever ever to score 100 goals in her career, and she now ranks 14th with 101.

Century Mark, Part II: Krause’s assist on the last goal of the first half was the 100th point of her career. She is the fourth Retriever to reach the milestone this season, joining Braerman (March 2), Pappas (March 5) and Coady (April 2) and marking just the second time – and first since Laura Robinson, Laurie Linnell, Jackie Abendschoen and Dolly Ginter in 1987 – that four UMBC teammates have each tallied 100 career points. Krause scored 24 points as a freshman at Duquesne before transferring to UMBC, where she has tallied 76 points in two seasons. Senior midfielder Ashley Stodter (92) is also nearing the mark. In addition, Pappas and Braerman both recently moved into the Retrievers’ all-time top 20 scoring list, ranking 18th and 19th with 127 and 125 points, respectively.

Streaking: Stodter (Silver Spring, Md./Good Counsel) has tallied a point in 18 straight games dating to April 10, 2010, while Krause has one in all 13 contests so far this season. In addition, Pappas has found the back of the net at least once in nine straight games dating to March 5.

Taking on the Best: UMBC will face three teams that were ranked in the top 10 in the most recent IWLCA poll, including No. 5 Loyola (March 23), No. 6 Florida (Feb. 23) and No. 10 Albany (April 30). In addition, Johns Hopkins (April 13) is also receiving votes in the poll. So far, the Retrievers are 1-2 against ranked opponents this season, falling to the then-16th-ranked Gators, 16-6, and to the then-sixth-ranked Greyhounds, 15-8, but upsetting then-No. 17 Towson, 10-9. UMBC is 7-86 against ranked teams since 1988 and has never beaten more than one ranked foe in the same season. The highest-ranked opponent the Retrievers have knocked off was 11th, accomplished three times (Boston University in 2006, George Mason in 2000 and Old Dominion in 1999).

20/20: The 20 goals scored against Manhattan on March 13 were the most UMBC has scored since March 29, 2010, a 20-7 win against the same Jaspers squad in Riverdale, N.Y. Combined with the 15 goals scored against Mount St. Mary’s in the next game on March 19, the Retrievers tallied 35 goals in back-to-back contests, their best two-game stretch since combining for 38 against Iona and Stony Brook March 17-21, 2009.

Beasts in America East: UMBC is one of two teams in the America East with two players averaging at least 3.0 points per game this season, as Krause (3.31) ranks fourth and Braerman (3.0) is tied for sixth.

Dawg Bites: The Retrievers have won four straight America East openers following their 10-8 victory over New Hampshire on March 23… It was UMBC’s first-ever win against the Wildcats in 10 all-time meetings… Sophomore defender Jamie Fahey (Baldwin, Md./Loch Raven), the reigning America East Rookie of the Year, earned the conference’s Defensive Player of the Week award on Feb. 21 and March 7… UMBC was a prefect 3-0 against Colonial Athletic Association opponents this season, defeating George Mason (19-7, Feb. 11), Towson (10-9, March 2) and Delaware (8-5, March 9)… Krause leads the Retrievers with 29 goals, 43 points and 20 draw controls, all career highs, and she is tied with Braerman for the team lead with 14 assists… Fahey has picked up a team-high 25 ground balls, while senior defender C.J. Durham (Pasadena, Md./Chesapeake) leads the Retrievers with 13 caused turnovers… UMBC was picked to finish third in the America East preseason poll.
