Head Women’s Lacrosse Coach Kelly Berger Selected to 2010-11 U.S. National Team

Head coach Kelly Berger enters her sixth year with the U.S. National Team.

BALTIMORE—UMBC head women’s lacrosse coach Kelly Berger was selected to the 2010-11 U.S. Senior Women’s National Team on Sunday following three days of tryouts at UMBC Stadium July 30-Aug. 1.

More than 80 players competed at the tryout, and Berger was among 36 selected to the roster by U.S. Lacrosse.

“I am honored to be selected to be a part of this team for another year,” Berger said. “The competition over the weekend was the most competitive in several years. The coaching staff is filled with great knowledge, and I look forward to learning even more from them throughout the next year.”

Berger, who was a two-time collegiate All-American and a Tewaaraton Trophy nominee at James Madison, is in her sixth year with the national team.

“This was the most competitive tryout I’ve ever been a part of,” said Team USA head coach Ricky Fried, a UMBC alum. “We think that this is the best team of 36 players for the style and tempo we want to play.”

The U.S. team program competes on an annual basis with tryouts held each summer. The squad debuts on Oct. 11 at the annual U.S. Lacrosse Stars and Stripes event in Boston. Other annual activities include the U.S. Lacrosse Champion Challenge in January and a series of national team clinics throughout the country.

In addition, the 36 players selected to the 2010-11 team will train for the 2013 Federation of International Lacrosse (FIL) World Cup.

In her first season as head coach, Berger guided the Retrievers to the America East title game after upsetting top-seeded Albany in the semifinals. It was UMBC’s first berth in the conference tournament since 2006, and Berger was rewarded for her team’s success with a three-year contract extension last month.
