5/3/2010

Lindsay Cox scored four goals to lead UMBC past Binghamton in a must-win game.

CAMBRIDGE, Mass.UMBC freshman midfielder Lindsay Cox (High Bridge, N.J./Voorhees) was named America East Women’s Lacrosse Rookie of the Week for the final week of the season, the conference announced Monday. It is the second award of the year for Cox, who was also named the league’s top rookie for Week 1.

Cox scored a career-high four goals on five shots for an extremely efficient .800 shooting percentage in UMBC’s 19-9 victory at America East rival Binghamton on Saturday. The game was a must-win for the Retrievers, who clinched a berth in the four-team America East Championship with the victory.

With the Retrievers trailing, 7-5, at halftime, Cox tallied four straight goals in a span of seven minutes to open the half and give UMBC the lead for good. The rookie also controlled a draw in the game.

Cox is the first Retriever to be named Rookie of the Week twice in UMBC’s seven seasons in the America East.

Cox and the fourth-seeded Retrievers will take on top-seeded and host Albany on Thursday at 1 p.m. in the America East semifinals. UMBC returns to the conference tournament for the first time since 2006.
